Hell Month

Sorry for not posting lately, I'm having Hell Month in university right now. Dammit, I hate how all the profs just have to wait till the exact same time to unleash all their assignments on us. I have an exam, a 7 minute movie (which I didn't even start shooting yet), and a 20 minute presentation ALL DUE ON THE SAME DAY! And right before my birthday too! ;_; *sigh* I'll be back regularly updating after Monday...that is, if I haven't killed myself from the maddness of it all.

The story is about a set of twin baby boys who were created/cloned in the laboratory as a part of gene altering/gene therapy experiment. Because of the nature of the project, the twins were born with superior physical strength and extremely high IQs. The twins became seperated at birth after a series of misfortunate events in the laboratory. One of the brothers grew up to be a biochemist in an America. He was assigned to a project where he has to travel to a small island in Japan to investigate a unidentified virus that has been spreading on the island. By a stroke of luck, he discovered that he had a twin brother...who does not appear to be all that he seems. They will soon found out their true identity, why were they separated at birth, what other secrets were hidden from them, if the epidemic has anything to do with them, who created them, and why?

2000 hits!

wow, it feels like it was just yesterday when I got 1000 hits. Now in just a little more than 2 weeks, I hit 2000! Thanks so much for visitng! I'm glad I'm not just rambling and posting things for myself here. ;)

Now, in other news...

As I announced earlier, I've been wanting to post Yasha, but the file size is prohibitive for posting on megaupload (each episode is about 300-400 mb). Sendspace has also been acting crazy lately, so now I need a new place where I can upload large filesizes. If anyone knows any good sites, PLEASE let me know. I've been checking around the net, but most of them just let you upload 100mb.

I would also like to know what you guys would like to see more of. I will of course continue to offer anime, dramas, and manga, but I would like to know what to concentrate a little more on.

This is a refreshing, yet heartfelt comedy about the 3 very unique personalities (more than that, all 3 are good looking!), that work until the wee hours of the night at a small confectionery called "Antique." The story follows the romance, family life and friendship that these 3 men from different generations experience.

Synopsis: Trying to escape his uneventful life, Albert, the son of a renowned general from Paris, makes a journey with his friend Franz. During his travels, he meets an immensely wealthy nobleman named The Count of Monte Cristo. Living in luxurious hotels, surrounded by beautiful women and strong bodygaurds, the charming but enigmatic count fascinates Albert. Albert invites the count to join the high society of Paris. However, unknown to Albert, his father had once framed the count and took the count's fiancee as his own.

This series was really fantastic, I highly recommend it, especially if you enjoy a good vengance story. The art was also something out of this world..definitely very Gustav Klint. Make sure to check out the book it was based on! ^^

Please Save My Earth [manga][first 8 of 12 volumes]

Here are the first 8 of 12 bunko volumes of Please Save My Earth. The final four should be up on the site by tomorrow....if I can put down reading "The Diary of Vaslav Nijinsky." A highly recommended read for anyone who's interested in psychology, dancers or human issues. It's the only book of its kind that was written by a famous artist (in this case, dancer) right when they were on the cusp of insanity. You can literally watch his mind slip away from schizophrenia as you read through it. It's extremely heartbreaking to read.

Synopsis

High school student Alice Sakaguchi has been having strange reoccurring dreams of life as another being, an alien scientist. After an unfortunate accident involving a young neighbor, it begins to seem as if the dreams are not dreams but memories. Already guilt ridden for the perceived sins of the present, it seems Alice may be consumed by tragedies that occurred before she was even born.

For fans of the anime- It has more comedy and more background, and it actually FINISHES THE STORY!! The 6 OVAs could not possibly convey all that happens in this 12 bunko (doublepacked) manga.

A note: Please don't be turnned off by Saki Hiwatari's somewhat rough art in the first couple of volumes. She began this series somewhat early in her career (and took 10 years to complete! Lucky you, you only have to wait 2 days to read it! ;) ) so she was still growing as an artist, as you can see in the pictures below, which illustrate the differences between her earlier volumes and later ones.

I have decided to get into manga distribution since it is easier to distribute than episodes, and I don't have to deal with sendspace. =P There're also lots of ones I have that I'd like to share with others, especially those which aren't very common on the net. For those worrying if this means that I won't be posting episodes anymore, don't worry, they'll still be coming regularly. ^^ Now that I finished Nobuta, I'm going to go through my discs and find a series that'll be easy for me to upload (ie not too many episodes, or too large a file size since I'll have to deal with megaupload). I am currently considering uploading the Japanese drama, Yasha. I watched it a few weeks ago, and it was one of the most gripping and original series I've seen in years. Summary of Full Moon

Full Moon focuses on a 12-year-old girl named Mitsuki Koyama. While Mitsuki is a talented singer, and indeed dreams of becoming a pop idol, she is afflicted by throat cancer, which seems curable only through surgery that will destroy her voice. One day she is visited by two shinigami whom only she can see, Takuto and Meroko, that go by the team name "Negi Ramen" or "Onion Noodles". These shinigami tell her she has but one year left to live. Mitsuki realizes she can't wait any longer and attempts to achieve her dream of becoming a singer. She does not look old enough to be a singer, so she makes a deal with one of the shinigami, Takuto, to transform her into a 16-year-old body who goes by the stage name of "Full Moon". Not only does she become older, but when she is in this form her throat is healthy, and she is able to sing without any difficulty.

To start a career as a singer, 16-year-old Mitsuki auditions in a singing contest. Though there is much competition, she is able to win over the judges with her enthusiam for singing and her excellent voice. Two years before the shinigami's arrival, she promised Eichi Sakurai, a boy she met in an orphanage, that they would both achieve their dreams together. Eichi wanted to become an astronomer and Mitsuki wanted to become a singer. Shortly after, Eichi was adopted and emigrated to America before Mitsuki could express her feelings for him. Because Mitsuki is fated to die, she is intent on achieving her dream and meeting Eichi. Mitsuki hopes that one day Eichi will hear her songs and return to her so they can be together again before her life ends.

In the manga, like the anime, Mitsuki debuts as a singer under the alias 'Full Moon'. However, unlike the anime, she does not gain instant overwhelming success and popularity as Full Moon and instead struggles to survive in charts. Despite their similar beginnings, the manga and the anime of this series enjoy extremely different plotlines.

Looking into Sendspace alternatives

I've been trying to upload Nobuta wo Produce to sendspace for almost two weeks now, but everytime it finishes uploading, it gives me an error. I'm getting really tired of it, so I'm now going to start uploading to a different server. Right now I'm thinking about either megaupload or megashares. Which do you guys prefer? Do you know of any better ones? Let me know in the commments or shoutbox.

Princess Tutu ep 17 - END

W.O.W. It is now almost 6 in the morning, and I have just finished marathoning the final 13 episodes of Princess Tutu. What a ride; despite the time, I am still completely wide awake and excited after finishing it. Few series have resonated with me as much as Tutu did. I was so attached to the story and characters in fact, that the fillerish episodes, while well made, angered me because I wanted to know more about what was going to happen next with these characters I had come to care so much about! The characters grew so much throughout the story, that characters that I had intially disliked because of their actions/personality became ones that I was rooting for, and characters that had started out one way endured a complete role reversal. And the shocking transformation of one of them in the end - the story was so engrossing that it made me feel the same revulsion another principal character felt upon them. This is definitely a series I'll rewatch to analyze the story and references. Tutu was many things in one: a ballet, an opera, a fairytale, a classic.

Princess Tutu ep 1 - 16

Here's an anime I've been wanting to see for a really long time. Don't be put off by it's cheeseball name - it might appear during the first 3-5 episodes that this is a light hearted series, but after that it takes a much darker turn. Princess Tutu is very much like the darker and more tragic Hans Christian Anderson stories like The Red Shoes and The Little Mermaid (the Disney version is completely different from the original). If you like ballet, classical music, or just a damn good story that's different from the norm, you'll love this series.

Summary

Think Cardcaptor Sakura meets Revolutionary Girl Utena, as directed by David Lynch, with ballet instead of sword duels.

This is a magical girl series that could have been written by Borges. Ahiru is a young student at a ballet academy, or perhaps she's a duck (in Japanese: ahiru) dreaming she is a young student at a ballet academy. Or perhaps she's a character in a fairy-tale written by the creepily nutcracker-like Drosselmeier.

There are strange things afoot at the academy: the star balletist is an affectless young man named ``Mute'', on whom Ahiru has an unrequited crush. Mute seems to be the pawn of the sinister Fakia, and the object of the talented, but icy, Ruu's desires. These two share a secret about Mute, which is part of the puzzle that Ahiru must solve.

Drosselmeier appears in a vision to explain that Ahiru, in the guise of "Princess Tutu", must gather the pieces of Mute's shattered heart, and restore him to wholeness.

This is a pre-Disney fairy-tale, from the time when fairy-tales were grim preparation for (or consolation at) living in a harsh world. Drosselmeier warns Ahiru that she must not confess her love for Mute, or she will vanish with the mist. Ahiru soon discovers that, in restoring Mute's heart is not necessarily doing him a favor: in addition to happiness, the heart feels fear, and sadness, and loneliness.

Although the anime is in many senses a magical girl show, it is also both fairy tale and meta-fairy tale, which adds a twist to the formal structure. It draws together many disparate elements of myth, fairy tale, ballet, and opera. Like many fairy tales, it's rich in wordplay, with names and terms are assign different layers of meaning, often across multiple languages (particularly English, German, and Italian). The soundtrack is classical and romantic, and episodes are often named for their most prominantly featured ballet movements. While Princess Tutu ultimately belongs the magical girl genre, it's also something more: like Revolutionary Girl Utena, it inhabits a world of both magic and myth. It also shares Utena's strong feminist themes and undertones -- Princess Tutu remains one of the few anime series that never panders to a poorly stereotypical portrayal of female characters, good or evil. The heroine successfully blends the traits of a true hero and an ordinary person, until eventually there is no line in between the two. The major female antagonist defies genre categorizing, being simultaneously villainous, heartbreaking and heroic in her own way.

Keel is a boy living in a town called Yabitsu, an area which prospered due to the energy from the nuclear generator brought by the catastrophe. His next kin, Aoi, is the secretary general of the New United Nations. She views the catastrophe as an opportunity to create a new world in which nations can help one another overcome differences in races and religions. However, her efforts to realise that vision fail because of the unwillingness of the nations to change. Gould, a military officer, feels that the only way to make an order is through the military. Using Ulysses, a nuclear submarine, along with his crew, including Keel's brother Tean, Gould carries out a coup to declare war against the New United Nations in his attack on Yabitsu.

Summary
Tsukushi is a new student at Eitoku Gakuen - an exclusive school attended by rich families' children. Being poor, she is always bullied and sabotaged by her schoolmates. Things become worse when she crosses the path of F4 (a group comprises of the 4 richest guys). And along the way, she makes friend with Rui, a person who has helped her often, and falls in love with him. Shortly after, her head rival, Tsukasa, also reveals that he likes her. This turn-around situation puts Tsukushi in a very difficult position as she doesn't know what to do.

Plot Summary: Even after death, life is full of paperwork and criminals. Tsuzuki is becoming closer with his fellow comrades, especially with Hisoka, but there is a dark past to how Tsuzuki died....

Nobuta wo Produce episodes 2 and 3, Mew

Today's agenda encompases episodes 2 and 3 of Nobuta wo Produce, and a song called "The Zookeeper's Boy" from the Danish dream-pop band Mew. These two episodes are a lot smaller in size than episode 1, which was a whopping 900 megabytes, so hopefully it'll be a lot easier for everyone to download.

How're the downloads working out for everyone so far? I just tried downloading the first episode of Nobuta off my link, and found it saying that there are too many users downloading it. Are you guys getting that frequently? Lemme know in the shoutbox or the comments section. If there are enough people having problems downloading, I'll look into using another server such as Megaupload (MU). If anyone knows any better alternative file servers, please let me know, because I can't really can't stand working with MU.

I was really disappointed to see that no one downloaded Please Save My Earth yet. Even if you are solely a dorama fan, I urge you to give a try because it's not like most typical animes. It is a very beautiful, dynamic, realistic, and intelligently told story that handles the character relationships and plots with a deftness I have seen in few other dramas or anime. It's not costing anything to download it, so give it a try. You've got nothing to lose. ;)

In other related music news, I saw a band I personally know called Hellogoodbye on TRL while I was channel surfing! o_O (well, I just know Forrest actually) I knew from the first time I heard them that they'd become big, but wow they've sure come a long way quickly! I was glad for them, but also very dismayed that they appeared on that horrible, tweenybopper TRL show. I was also disappointed about one outright lie they said. It seems like it's in vogue for bands these days to claim that they've known each other since childhood, since I suppose that they believe it gives them credibility, and seem less manufactured. Now, while Hellogoodbye isn't manufactured, and most of the members actually do know each other, the drummer was actually added to their band around last year or so because the old one decided to focus more on school. I really hope they won't sell out or become corrupted by the system. I'm tired of that happening to all my favorite indie/underground bands.

Summary

Kiritani Shuji is the popular guy who gets along with everyone. From the jerks, to the nerds to the just plain weird. He's the man that everyone can count on. What they don't know is that Shuji knows how predictable his classmates are and he plays off their predictability to his advantage. His day to day existence as "Shuji-kun" is just a facade he uses to play in the school popularity game. Truth be told, Shuji is bored.

Shuji gets along with everybody, but the one person he can't stand the most is Kusano Akira. Unlike Shuji, Akira is just plain annoying. Akira loves his soy milk so much, he gets drunk from it. He laughs funny, he talks funny, and he even acts funny. Nobody in class takes Akira seriously. Shuji can't stand the sight of Akira and it drives him nuts that Akira does whatever he wants despite Shuji's expressed dislike of him.

Shuji has a daily ritual of touching a certain willow tree for good luck. One day, he is surprised to find out that his willow tree was uprooted and in it's place, he finds a freaky looking girl telling him that some people took the tree somewhere else to be spotted. She joked that she was planning to hang herself from that tree. Scared, Shuji runs away.

Things heat up when a new student comes to school, Shuji is shocked to find out that the new student was the freaky girl he saw the day his willow tree disappeared. Her name is Kotani Nobuko, a girl who has no self confidence at all and is content at being made fun of and bullied in school.

Shuji and Akira come to an accord that in order to make use of their "youth" they will "produce" Nobuko as the next popular girl. One of the conditions though is that nobody should find out that they are working together as a team to make this concept possible.

Of course, nobody can be a protagonist without an antagonist. There is a mysterious girl in school jeopardizing the duo's plan to make Nobuko popular. The mystery is still unfolding.

A story of friendship between three people who would not have been friends if not given the special circumstances. This show is really hilarious.

Summary

Summer Snow is a love story between a young man who has been forced to grow up too quickly, and a young woman with an ailment that has placed restrictions on her life. Natsuo (Domoto Tsuyoshi) has been looking after his younger brother and sister since the death of their parents. He has also been running the family bicycle shop. Yuki (Hirosue Ryoko) becomes the only person in the world in whom he can confide. For Yuki, Natsuo becomes the catalyst that has her trying to break out of her cocoon.

As much as I love my glasses, they can sometimes be incredibly annoying. It took me almost 20 minutes to find them this morning, making me late to class. I just hate that situation: You can't see without your glasses, and you can't find them unless you have them on. I wish there was some sort of paging device I could have on them, so I could at least find them by ear. Wouldn't that just be great? Then you could drive everyone crazy over the mysterious beeping noises coming from inside your couch or under your bed. It's weird really how stuff can end up in the weirdest of places, even though you have absolutely no recollection of leaving it there. For example, I had spent weeks searching for one of my most favorite (and expensive ><) watches, and was afraid that it had gone permanently missing. I tore up every single inch of my house looking for that damn thing, but to no avail. But like how most things tend to be, I ended up finding it when I wasn't looking for it. And where was it? INBETWEEN THE TISSUES IN MY TISSUE BOX! o.0 How in the hell it got there, I have no clue. I swear there must be house goblins here stealing all my shit!

Please Save My Earth episodes 1 - 2

First up is the anime based on my most favorite series of all time. The anime is 6 episodes long, while the manga is 21 volumes, so unfortunately, it isn't able to cover all the territory the manga was able to. What it has covered though was done beautifully, and so it'll be The Pirate Caves first treasure offering. ;) These videos were specially ripped straight off a dvd for me by a friend of mine, so while the picture might be Big & Beautiful, the file size might be a little too much for those of you on dial-up. Sorry guys. ;)

Synopsis

High school student Alice Sakaguchi has been having strange reoccurring dreams of life as another being, an alien scientist. After an unfortunate accident involving a young neighbor, it begins to seem as if the dreams are not dreams but memories. Already guilt ridden for the perceived sins of the present, it seems Alice may be consumed by tragedies that occurred before she was even born.

Review

For only being six episodes in length, Please Save My Earth, manages to present a compelling and tragic story concerning both the uplifting and dangerous obsessive aspects of love and the power of destiny. Part of what makes the narrative so effective is the time given to character development for the main parties involved. Even the primary antagonist, who on first brush seems simply a cruel manipulator seeking vengeance, has a much more complex and conflicting set of motivations. Some parties that seem innocent are not perhaps as innocent as they might claim. Without three-dimensional fleshed out characters, a romance or drama will fall flat, and Please Save My Earth does an excellent job of bringing to life its cast.

With all these characters to work with, they also get to explore the implications of reincarnation from a number of different angles. We have certain characters frustrated with the time differentials involved in their reincarnation and others dealing with complications such as being reborn as a different gender, yet still having the same romantic attachments in the past. It was interesting to see some of the characters attempt to escape from their past lives while others seem to be doing everything to embrace them.

Please Save My Earth presents a haunting and tragic drama of unusual depth. Though the show does have some action toward the end, those who are looking for something a action oriented or who have a dislike of romantic melodrama should subtract a star and look elsewhere. For those of you who like your romance a bit more Brontesque than many shoujo titles, go ahead and add a star.
